Why were the Duffer Brothers hit with a lawsuit?
The Duffer Brothers claim that they got the idea for Stranger Things after watching the movie Prisoners, in which a father struggles to deal with his daughter's disappearance. They wanted to make an eight-part series that would go into greater depth about those emotions. Montauk was the name of their initial pitch. Another author by the name of Charlie Kessler disputed that project's backstory. Kessler released a short film with the same title in 2012, years before the Duffer Brothers pitched their project. The story in Kessler's film was about a boy who goes missing close to a military base that is doing experiments with other worlds. What a synchronicity! In fact, Kessler pitched the Duffer Brothers this idea for a feature film at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014, two years before Stranger Things came out. Kessler filed a lawsuit against the Duffer Brothers and demanded a third of the proceeds from the series. However, after seeing deposition documents from 2010 that demonstrated the Duffer Brothers independently developed the concept, he dropped the suit in 2019. Because of a 1992 book, Montauk already has a lot of urban legends.
